October 16, 2024
From 27 October 2024 to 27 October 2025, Amsterdam will have a year full of celebrations and commemorations to celebrate the founding of the city 750 years ago in 1275. Throughout the year, there will be special events, and many annual events will also take this year of celebration as inspiration. Below are some of the events we can’t wait to experience this upcoming year in Amsterdam, but first a look back at the history of the city.
A brief history of Amsterdam: 750 years of growth and resilience
Amsterdam's history dates back to 1275 when a small fishing village emerged on the banks of the Amstel River. Over the centuries, the village grew into a bustling port city, strategically located at the intersection of major trade routes. Amsterdam's strategic location, coupled with its progressive policies, attracted merchants, artisans, and intellectuals from across Europe and it quickly became a centre of commerce, culture, and religious tolerance.
In the 17th century, Amsterdam experienced its Golden Age, a period of unprecedented prosperity and cultural flourishing, though these golden times came at a cost to others around the world. The city's merchants dominated global trade, and its artists, scholars, and philosophers made significant contributions to the arts and sciences. Amsterdam's fortunes began to decline in the 18th century as the Dutch Republic lost its economic and political dominance.
Despite these setbacks, Amsterdam has continued to adapt and evolve, preserving its rich history while embracing the challenges and opportunities of the modern world. As the city prepares to celebrate its 750th anniversary, it reflects on its past achievements and looks forward to a future filled with continued growth, innovation, and resilience.
